Michael QuellA Blurring Cloud, a new composition written by Michael Quell, will premiere June 15, 2012 at the Classical Minds Festival in Houston, Texas. The piece will be performed by Duo46 at the Dudley Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Houston. The piece will also be performed in Fulda, Germany at the Great Hall of Ancient University on June 25, 2012 and again on June 27, 2012 at the University of Music in Wurzburg, Germany.

Tarik O'ReganThe Utah Chamber Artists featured the premiere of a new work by Tarik O'Regan in their Spring Concert at the University of Utah in Libby Gardner Hall on April 30, 2012. The piece for SATB chorus and Soprano solo, entitled After Rain (Petrichor), was conducted by Dr. Barlow Bradford, director of the Utah Chamber Artists. There was also be a pre-concert lecture featuring Mr. O'Regan in the Libby Gardner Hall. For more information about this premiere, click here.

UCA soprano Liz Hodson was quoted in The Salt Lake Tribune as saying the piece "creates the aural expereince of rain through music that shimmers and bursts with the texture of water." The piece was set to poems by Edward Thomas. Hodsen continued in the article to say that Tarik O'Regan's piece "takes the words of the poem, which are wonderful, and paints them so well. Benjamin EllinBenjamin Ellin's Barlow Prize piece, Pandora, received its world premiere April 6, 2012 in the de Jong Concert Hall on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic, was the featured soloist with the BYU Philharmonic, conducted by Kory Katseanes.

David SargentFive Sketches for Brass Quintet, a composition written by David Sargent, premiered April 5, 2012 in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Building on the campus of Brigham Young University. The UVU Brass Quintet performed the piece.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Christian AsplundChristian Asplund's new piece, How to be Spring, premiered March 27, 2012 on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The piece was performed by the BYU Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Kory Katseanes, in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Eric ChasalowEric Chasalow's new composition, Incident and Scatter, premiered on March 9, 2012 at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City. The Talea Ensemble performed the piece as a part of a concert of world premieres written for the ensemble.

The New York Times stated that "Chasalow fashioned giddy interaction between a live sextet and recorded electronics, playfully derailing anticipated resolutions throughout." To read the rest of the article, click here.  

Harold MeltzerAqua, Harold Meltzer'sBarlow Prize commissioned piece, premiered February 16, 2012 in Brooklyn, New York. The Avalon String Quartet performed the piece at the Bargemusic Concert Hall.

Dan ViscontiLonesome Roads, a Barlow prize piece written by Dan Visconti, premiered January 23, 2012 by the Gryphon Trio in Walter Hall on the campus of the University of Toronto for their annual New Music Festival in Ontario, Canada . It will also be performed by Triple Helix on May 12, 2012 in the Recital Hall at Southern Oregon University.

Evis SammoutisEvis Sammoutis' new composition, entitled Breath, premiered in Julliard's Paul Hall in New York City, New York on January 23, 2012. It was performed by The New York Woodwind Quintet as a part of Julliard's Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series.
