Pulitzer Prize Winners & Finalists

Four Barlow Commissioned Pieces Recognized by The Pulitzer Prizes
In 2004, Harold Meltzer received notification that his application had been reviewed and he had been selected – the Barlow Endowment was commissioning him to compose an original work. The completed piece, titled Brion, premiered in 2008. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize the following year.
Brion was not the first Barlow Commission to be honored by the Pulitzer Prizes; it was actually the fourth. Stephen Hartke’s Meanwhile was a finalist in 2008. Joan Tower’s Concerto for Violin was a finalist in 1993. And Melinda Wagner’s Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion won the Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
These four pieces witness to the quality of work produced by the Barlow Endowment. The Endowment has, and will continue, “. . . to engender and support excellence in musical composition.”
Additionally, several composers who have recieved Barlow Commissions have also been recognized by The Pulitzer Prizes for their works. Below is a complete least of Barlow composers who have either won a Pulitzer Prize, or been considered as finalists.
